Live music in Paignton used to mean a covers band on a Saturday or whatever was on at the Palace Theatre. Black Ivory is the piano bar in Paignton that does it differently — a working piano in a room small enough that you can hear someone breathe between notes.
There's live music here most nights of the week, and a proper schedule of guest performers, themed evenings and open mic sessions on top. If you're looking for live music in Torbay or live music in Devon more broadly, this is one of the few venues programming serious sessions every week rather than once a month.

Live Piano · from 8pm
Our resident pianist, two sets, no cover charge. Drunken Horse Gin, wines by the glass, canapés and small plates. The most popular night of the week — book early. Tables typically gone by Tuesday lunchtime.
Open Mic Piano · Paignton's friendliest open mic · 3pm
Hosted by Tony Scorza and Al Bovey. Any pianist is welcome to play the Grand — bring a song, an arrangement, or just sit down and see what happens. A Sunday afternoon institution in the making, and the friendliest live music room in Torbay.
Jazz & Gin Night · the only monthly jazz night in Paignton · from 8pm
Slower tempo, stronger drinks. A different jazz line-up each month — sometimes piano trio, sometimes vocal-led, occasionally guests from Bristol or Exeter. Our gin menu opens up for the night with featured pours and gin flights.

Hosts of our monthly Open Mic Piano afternoons. Both seasoned performers in their own right, both committed to making the room a place where pianists at any level feel welcome to play. If you've ever wanted to sit at a grand piano in front of a room of people, first Sunday of the month is your moment.
· Every Wednesday ·
Wednesday evenings are the anchor of our week. Two sets, starting at 8pm — a mix of jazz standards, contemporary pieces and requests from the room. The right musician for a room this size: no amplification, no playlist, just someone who knows how to hold an audience.

If you're a pianist, vocalist or jazz musician based in Torbay, Devon or further afield and you want to play Black Ivory — get in touch. We're always looking for guest performers for our weekend slots and one-off themed evenings. We pay properly and the room is set up for live performance.

Black Ivory is in central Paignton, two minutes from the seafront. We're a fifteen-minute drive from Torquay. Brixham is twenty minutes by car, Newton Abbot half an hour, Exeter just under an hour.
